As this month’s Member spotlight, we got to hear from Rimkus, Business Development Manager, Built Environmental Solutions - Eastern Canada, Joe McLean:
How many years have you been in this business?
I have been in business Development for 13 years and over 5 years in the Built Environment Industry
Why did you join BOMA?
To network with other professionals in the industry and for the personal and professional development opportunities. Oh, and the golf tournaments.
What's one thing - either industry-related or not - you learned in the last month?
Don't sweat the small stuff has become my mantra in the past month. It encourages me to not worry or stress about minor issues or insignificant details in life. The idea behind this phrase is to remind me to maintain perspective, prioritize what truly matters, and avoid getting bogged down by trivial matters that may not have a significant impact in the grand scheme of things.
What educational or business experiences best prepared you for your career?
Owning my own business at a young age has prepared me to look at business from all aspects and taught me the importance of understanding the client, building meaningful relationships, adapting to feedback and communicating effectively.
What advice would you give to professionals coming in to the commercial industry?
Customer service matters! Building and maintaining positive relationships with clients, tenants, and other stakeholders is crucial for long-term success.
Adaptability is key as the commercial real estate market is dynamic. Being adaptable to changes in the market, regulations, and technology is extremely essential for sustained success.
Network, network, network. I can’t stress the importance of building a strong professional network enough. Attend industry events, join real estate associations, and connect with other professionals in the field.
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be and why?
Success often takes time. Trust the process, stay patient, and celebrate the small victories along the way.
What's your favourite movie and why?
Tin Cup- one of the central themes of the movie is Roy McAvoy's (Kevin Costner) perseverance and determination. Despite facing various challenges and setbacks, he continues to pursue his passion for golf and refuses to give up on his dreams. And that scene on the final hole is so good!
If you could have dinner with someone famous (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
I choose alive- Would make for way better dinner conversation.
I would love to share a meal, glass of wine and a cigar with Micheal Jordan. He is the ultimate competitor with a work ethic I’ve always admire. He would stop at nothing to win. I would like to get a small glimpse into how his mind works.
How do you define success?
Success for me is setting and achieving specific goals, whether they are personal, professional or related to any other aspect of life. The process of working toward and attaining these objectives is extremely important when defining success.
I also define success in terms of personal happiness, contentment, and fulfillment. This perspective emphasizes the importance of finding meaning and satisfaction in my life, relationships and experiences.
